Sustainability — A Lighter Footprint in Baja

20–30 Knots · El Sargento, Baja, MX

Big adventures. Thoughtful choices.

The desert, the wind and the Sea of Cortez are why we love this place. At 20–30 Knots, we’ve invested in solar power, battery storage and water reuse to help care for the setting that makes a stay here special.

Making the most of Baja’s sunshine

Our solar panels generate electricity for the property, and our batteries store energy for overnight use and backup during local outages. We monitor the system through Victron to follow solar generation, battery storage and electricity use day to day.

The 75–100+ kWh figure reflects daily production we’ve observed through our monitoring system. Solar output varies with sunshine, season and weather.

Giving water a second purpose

Water matters in a desert community. Our Bio-Aqua biodigester treats wastewater from the homes so it can be reused for landscape irrigation through a deep-drip system. Water that has served the houses can then help support the landscaping, reducing the fresh water needed for irrigation.

You may notice a small white utility building at the front of the property. It houses the treatment system’s blower, which keeps the process aerated. The system is maintained as part of caring for the homes.

Refill, refresh, repeat

Each kitchen has a dedicated purified drinking-water spigot beside the sink, making it easy to refill a reusable bottle before heading out. A shared purified-water ice maker supplies the homes, and fresh ice is placed in each freezer before arrival. These conveniences make it easier to avoid buying individual plastic water bottles during your stay.

A different kind of home

20 Knots and 30 Knots were built from repurposed, single-trip shipping containers. Their original structure is part of the character of the houses, paired with comfortable bedrooms, generous decks and views of the bay. Reuse is one part of our approach, alongside the systems we’ve added to reduce ongoing electricity and water demand.

Small choices during your stay

Enjoy the homes and help us care for them with a few easy habits:

  • Refill your water bottle at the kitchen’s purified-water spigot.
  • Close doors and windows while the air conditioning is running, and turn it off when it is not needed.
  • Use the rinse hose thoughtfully when washing salt and sand from beach equipment.
  • Turn off lights and appliances when you finish using them.
  • Help the wastewater system by putting only toilet paper and human waste in toilets. Put wipes, sanitary products and other items in the bin.

Always improving

We’re proud of these investments, and we’ll keep looking for practical ways to do better. Our aim is a comfortable, memorable Baja stay with more thoughtful use of the resources around us.

Come for the adventure. Settle into a place we care about.
